More West Bend Pictures

Dr. Mahn has some more pictures from saturday up on his web site. You can get there by clicking here.

Results and Resources

Okay, a little bit of house keeping information:

Meet results are usually posted on the internet within 24 hours depending on how organized the meet directors are. Finding the results however can be a challenge. Some times they are on the host schools' web site, sometimes they are on a conference site, but most often they are on the WCCCA site. I have posted them as a permanent link on the right side of this Blog as "Wisconsin Runner". Simply click the link and then click Results. Unfortunately the West Bend numbers are not up yet.

The other links are:

'Dyestat' this is a national site that collects information from all over the country. The relevant part here is the 'Wisconsin' chat room where there are usually a couple dozen local runners discussing current events. Dom has banned the team from participating on this site but parents might find some of it amusing.

Wisconsin Track and Field --- this site compiles an honor roll and best of list as well as some results. They don't have any cross country info up yet but last year they kept track of who had the best times in the state by class.

WIAA --- this is the official state governing body and has a list of rules and regs as well as info on the sectional and state meet.

Day by Day --- this is a cartoon that I like, and I was using it to experiment with different formats for the site. It has nothing to do with running but it is too much of a hassle to go back into the template and delete it, so it stays.

The Amazon links are to books that I have read and that I highly recommend. In particular the first book, "God on the starting line" is not a religious book at all despite the title, it is however an honest look at exactly what a typical high school cross country season entails. This is an essential book for parents who know nothing about cross country but would like an insiders view. The other book worth mentioning is the Daniels training guide, I know that Dom uses this as a reference and it provides the science and theory behind a lot of the workouts that the guys do.

The comments are turned on. If you want to comment on a post simply click on the word comment, choose 'other' give yourself a name and write away. I will of course delete anything profane or inappropriate.

Finally, a number of people have asked about a 'chat' board... Here's the deal, every couple of days I will post a picture with the title "Open Thread" this means that the topic for the comments can be whatever. This will be the de facto chat area. It's the best I can do with this site.

Pictures from saturday August 27th 2005

For those of you who missed it, saturday was as good as it gets for a cross country meet. The weather was great, the competition was good, and the results showed that this year's teams are already as good as or better than last year's version. I'm experimenting with different ways to post pictures without using up too much bandwidth.

This link
http://www.photoshow.net/view/DvXPzsHBe will take you to a slide show of pictures that I took on saturday. I didn't do any editing. I use a small pocket size point and shoot camera which was not designed for sports or action pictures, so many pictures look like I was standing in another county. Add to that that the pictures are further compressed at least twice before they can be uploaded and the quality drops way down. The originals are actually pretty good and I can print decent copies if there is one that you really like just let me know. They should come up in the order that the races were run. There are only a few from the last race because I ran out of memory. I think I have at least one picture of everyone who ran except Doug. Sorry Doug I'm sure I pushed the button but when I got home and looked where your picture should have been there was an extra shot of Flanders. I have no idea what happened. The music and the effects are a generic default package that I just left on. My kids inform me that the music is lame but it's free and I didn't have time to go looking for anything else. I will post some of the better individual pictures on the site tomorrow.

It does take a few minutes to load so be patient.

Wake up sleepyhead!

On Wednesday The Men's team kicked off a new wake up service. When chronically late sophomore Andrew E. failed to show for the morning run the team sprang into action. They ran down to Andrew's house hoping to ring the doorbell and remind him to turn off his alarm and actually get up. Instead, when they arrived, Andrew's mom invited them to go on up to his room and physically extract him. While there are no actual pictures of the event, witnesses say that Andrew could be heard desperately yelling "Mom, where are my shorts" as fifteen runners converged on his room.

Sensing that they were on to something, the team repeated the process again on Thursday when Brian V. failed to show. This time, an un-named team member actually opened the door to the bathroom and greeted Brian as he was finishing his shower. Witnesses report that Brian's sister looked a little stunned when she opened the front door and everyone started up the stairs for Brian's room.

Who's next?

Push the snooze button again and it could be you.

Introduction / First Post

Welcome Aboard !

This site is intended to be informational, which means primarily things like schedules, maps, results, and pictures when I get time.

Because I am a parent I tend to write and post things that I think will be useful for the other parents. I am open to expand into other areas if anyone has suggestions and if time permits.

I would like to post pictures every week, but as Jake can vouch I am a terrible photographer, so if anyone has pictures in a digital format, you are more than welcome to e-mail them and I will try to get them up. Otherwise you are stuck with my grainy attempts.

The season officially started yesterday with the morning practice. Hopefully everyone has been running somewhere even if they weren't at the team runs. The guys are experimenting with two-a-days while the women are not. It's a small men's team this year but it's a quality group. It would be nice to recruit a few more freshman ... or maybe some of those guys riding the bench for the soccer team.
